Kirishima is the name that immediately jumps off the page when looking at the Japan Sumo Association’s newly released banzuke rankings.

The veteran is no longer a “former ōzeki,” as a title-winning performance in March, which came on the back of strong outings in the previous two tournaments, resulted in promotion back to his previous rank.

The Mongolia native had fallen out of the spotlight over the past couple of years, and was almost completely eclipsed by new stars Onosato and Aonishiki.
