Yokoze, Saitama Pref. – When Hitomi Niwa first heard about Yokoze in 2022, she wasn’t looking for a new place to live.
A nurse at a hospital in Tokyo, Niwa had been feeling overwhelmed by the demands of her profession when she happened to strike up a conversation with the proprietor of a curry restaurant near her home in Nakano Ward. He owned a property in the Saitama Prefecture town and split his time between there and the capital.
“As we chatted, he told me about Yokoze and how open it is to newcomers,” says Niwa, 28. “Given my love of nature, he thought it might be a good fit for me.”
