Situation 1: Mr. Tian meets his old landlady Mrs. Mori, who had been hospitalized.

ティエン： 森さん、入院されたと聞いてびっくりしましたが、だいじょうぶですか。

森： ええ、すっかりよくなりました。あとは半年ごとに病院に検査に行けばいいんです。

Tian: Mori-san, nyūin-sareta-to kiite bikkuri-shimashita-ga, daijōbu-desu-ka?.

Mori: Ee, sukkari yoku-narimashita. Ato-wa hantoshi-goto-ni byōin-ni kensa-ni ikeba-ii-n-desu.

Tian: Mrs. Mori, I was surprised to hear you were hospitalized. Are you all right?

Mori: Yes, I’ve recovered completely. After that, I only need to go to the hospital for a check-up every six months.

Today we will introduce the proper use of the suffix ごと, meaning “every” or “each.” ごと is usually used in the pattern Xごとに, where X is a period of time, number or unit. When X is a time period, Xごとに expresses that someone does something or that something happens every X. Examples: 4年（よねん）ごとにオリンピックが 開（ひら）かれる。(The Olympics are held every four years.); この メールソフトは５分（ごふん）ごとに新着（しんちゃく）メールをチェックします。（This mail program checks for new messages every five minutes.）. X can be an action verb such as 会（あ）う (to meet), 使（つか）う (to use) or アクセスする (to access), and ごと sounds rather formal or bookish. Examples: この電話（でんわ）は５分（ごふん）経過（ けいか）するごとに料金（りょうきん）が50円（ごじゅうえん）かかります。 (This phone call charges ¥50 for every five minutes.); 筋肉（きんにく）は年齢（ねんれい）が上（あ）がるごとに減少（げんしょう）する。 (Muscle decreases with age.). X can also be a noun that shows the occasion. Examples: 一雨（ひとあめ）ごとに暖（あたた）かくなりますね。 (It’s getting warm every time it rains, isn’t it?); 石田（いしだ）さんは会（あ）う人（ひと）ごとに赤（あか）ちゃんの写真（しゃしん）を見（み）せている。 (Mr. Ishida shows the photo of his baby to everyone he meets.).

Situation 2: Ms. Gray asks her boss, Mr. Okubo, about the meeting.

グレイ： こんどの会議ではどんなことが決まったんですか。

大久保： 業務改善について、グループごとに報告書を出すように言われたんだ。

Gray: Kondo-no kaigi-de-wa donna koto-ga kimatta-n-desu-ka?

Okubo: Gyōmu-kaizen-ni tsuite, gurūpu-goto-ni hōkokusho-wo dasu yō-ni iwareta-n-da.

Gray: What was decided in the meeting?

Okubo: It was decided to assign each group a business improvement report.

ごと also attaches to nouns that show the group or unit. Examples: ファイルはテーマごとに色分（いろわ）けされている。 (Files are color-coded according to the subject.); クラスごとにクラス委員（いいん）を選（えら）ばなければならない。 (Each class has to elect a rep.).

販売員（はんばいいん）： こちらの新商品（しんせいひん）は、 アフターケアを充実（じゅうじつ）させております。買（か）っていただいたあとも、１年（いちねん）ごとに無料でメンテナンスをいたしますので、いつもいい状態（じょうたい）で使（つか）えるようになっています。

大久保： でも、急（きゅう）に故障（こしょう）することもありますよね。

販売員： はい、地域（ちいき）ごとにサービスセンターがありますので、そちらにご連絡（れんらく）いただければ、そこからすぐにうかがいます。

大久保： あと、セキュリティーが心配（しんぱい）なんですけど。

販売員： はい、それについては３か月（さんかげつ）ごとにパスワードを変（か）えていただくようにしています。

大久保： わかりました。で、価格（かかく）ですが、もう少（すこ）し何（なん）とかなりませんか。

販売員： ぜひ、そうしたいところなんですが、製品（せいひん）ごとに、割引率（わりびきりつ）が決（き）まっていますので、もうこれ以上（いじょう）は . . . 。

大久保： うーん、そうですか。それは残念（ざんねん）！

Sales staff: This new product comes with a great deal of after-sales care. After you buy it, we do free maintenance every year, so you can always keep it in good condition.

Okubo: But, it might suddenly break down.

Sales staff: Yes, but we have a service center in each area, and if you contact us, we’ll come from there.

Okubo: I see. As for the price, could you lower it a bit more?
