Taiwan President Lai Ching-te is calling for the creation of a global “nonred” supply chain among democratic nations to “deter the expansion of authoritarianism.”

Proposed as an alternative to China-dominated supply chains, the initiative urges democracies to cooperate in securing advanced manufacturing supply chains — particularly in the semiconductor sector.

Crucial to the success of such a proposal is that it span the entire Asia-Pacific region, including India, Japan, Mexico and Taiwan, and as many other countries as possible. Moreover, while the redrawing of global value chains should prioritize advanced manufacturing sectors such as semiconductors, it should not be limited to them. From mobile handset manufacturing to data centers, a nonred supply chain should reduce democracies’ reliance on China for essential goods.
